The Largest University of Pakistan by Area

Pakistan has a wide network of public and private universities, aimed at providing research and higher education opportunities in the country. Punjab University (PU) in Lahore is the only university Pakistan had at the time of independence. After the partition, Pakistan established many public universities in other provinces including Sindh University, Peshawar University, Karachi University and Balochistan University. Now, Pakistan has more than 213 higher educational institutions all around the country. Also, it has 3,193 technical and vocational institutes.

Punjab University (PU) is the largest and oldest university in Pakistan. Established in 1882 at Lahore, the University of Punjab is a well known higher education institute in Pakistan. It was the first university built in the sub-continent in Muslim majority area. Punjab University is spread over an area of 1800 acre which includes;

• 10 constituent colleges

• 13 faculties

• 658 affiliated colleges

• 73 departments.

PU offers a wide list of graduate, undergraduate, and post-graduate degree programs. The well-known “Quaid e Azam Campus” is the centre of administrative and academic activities of the university. It is spread over a lush green landscape and located 12 kilometres from South of Allama Iqbal Campus.

A large number of students apply for getting admission in Punjab University annually from all over Punjab and most from south of Punjab. It offers maximum facilities to the students such as;

Modern Culture

There are over 6500 advanced computers available in university and 30,536 laptops are distributed between students by the Government of Punjab. In the student’s hostels, PU provides a 24/7 internet facility and free hotspot across the university.

Sports

PU offers a variety of facilities in sports, for instance, hockey, playing fields for cricket, football and athletics, a swimming pool for male students, and squash courts. Also provides indoor game facilities in the hostels at the Quaid-e-Azam Campus.

Playing fields for cricket, hockey and football and a female swimming pool are available in Allama Iqbal Campus. In the canal of Quaid-e-Azam campus and also in river Ravi, the boat club offers creative activities. Sports offices of each campus manage the sports facilities for both male and female students. Punjab University cares for both mental and physical health of students.

Every year, the university organizes sports competitions at inter-department, intercollegiate and inter-university levels. Different types of sports like hockey, football, cricket, badminton, athletics, etc are played to encourage the development of sports. Scholarships are given to the outstanding sports players, and winners of the events are awarded prizes, trophies and medals.
